Best places to see whales from shore near Tadoussac

Meilleurs endroits pour voir les baleines de la rive près de Tadoussac

The Haute-Côte-Nord, more precisely between Tadoussac and Les Escoumins, is renowned for being one of the best places in the world to see marine mammals, and not only by going on whale-watching tours, but also from the shore. Since the river is very deep, very quickly from the bank, it is not impossible to see the largest animals in the world very close to the shore. Obviously, patience is required to have this opportunity.

  1. Cap de Bon-Désir
    Website
Cost: Access fee during opening hours
This historic site, administered by Parks Canada, is officially open to the public from late June to early October. The dynamic naturalists from Explos-Nature are on site to give you lots of information on the site, the whales and the surrounding nature. However, as if it is a Parks Canada site, access is subject to a fee.

  2. The Bergeronnes Base de plein air

    Cost: Free
Probably one of my favourite spots in the region. A well-kept secret in the region, the Base de Plein air offers a panoramic view of the river. Although further away from the whales than other sites, the stunning views increase your chances of seeing whale blows, even from very far away. In addition, access is free.

  3. Marine Mammal Discovery Center (CDMM) in Escoumins
    Website
Cost: Access fee during opening hours
The CDMM, also administered by Parks Canada, is a place well known for its diving center . On the other hand, like Cap de Bon-Désir, it remains an important observation site for marine mammals. An activity not to be missed if you go is the St. Lawrence Live presentation, an animated diving activity projected live in a room, where you can speak directly with the divers and ask them any questions. A site and activities for young and old. Obviously, this is also a site where an entrance fee is required.

  4. Quai des Pilotes, Les Escoumins
    Google Maps
    Cost: Free
Directly adjacent to the CDMM is the famous Quai des Pilotes, where St. Lawrence pilots board cargo boats to assist captains from around the world in navigating the waters of the St. Lawrence. From the wharf itself, or from the rock cape next door, you can also have the chance to see belugas, and all kinds of whales, and all for free!

  5. Tadoussac Dunes
    Google Maps
    Cost: Free
Obviously, the Tadoussac dunes are an unmissable stop in the region. From the top of the dunes, a bit like the Bergeronnes outdoor base, you can see the breath of these giants. On the other hand, unlike Bergeronnes, expect a bigger crowd.

  6. Pointe de l’Islet, in Tadoussac
    Google Maps
    Cost: Free
A unique place, with a magnificent view of the Saguenay Fjord, Pointe de l'Islet Park is a great place for observing belugas and minke whales. Larger whales, such as humpbacks and blue whales, are most visible from the shore, from Bergeronnes and Escoumins.

As mentioned above, these sites are fantastic for observing marine mammals, especially if you plan to stay there for hours. With lunch, sunscreen and patience, you'll definitely be able to see a few things during the summer months.

If you want to optimize your chances of seeing them, don't hesitate to book your whale watching cruise with Du Fleuve , where our passionate captains will take you directly to the best places.

See you soon on the North Shore!
