Hydrophone exploration
Listen to whale songs live through our hydrophone.

The experience
Step aboard our 12-passenger zodiacs or our sea-kayaking expeditions and let our passionate team guide you in observing whales, seals, and seabirds while exploring the richness of the St. Lawrence River. Each outing follows the approach guidelines established by the Saguenay–St. Lawrence Marine Park, ensuring respectful and responsible encounters with wildlife. To reduce the number of boats at observation sites and minimize disturbance, our departure times are intentionally staggered compared to other operators.
About our hydrophone
A hydrophone is an underwater microphone designed to capture and amplify sounds beneath the surface. Submerged directly in the river, it is connected to a listening system that allows real-time playback of the sounds collected. It reveals an otherwise invisible world: beluga vocalizations, whale blows, echolocation clicks, and many other sounds from the marine environment.
At Du Fleuve, the hydrophone is used both during our whale-watching cruises and on certain sea kayaking excursions when conditions allow. However, the surrounding sound environment plays a critical role. The hydrophone picks up all vibrations in the water, including engine noise, waves, and maritime traffic. The calmer the river, the clearer and more immersive the listening experience.
In this context, sea kayaking offers the quietest and most immersive alternative for underwater listening. Without a motor and at a slower pace, it minimizes noise disturbance and allows for a more refined and intimate connection with the environment. It is a different way to explore the river, particularly suited for those looking to experience marine life through sound.
On our zodiacs, the hydrophone complements the guided experience and adds a rich auditory dimension to wildlife observation. In kayaking, the experience relies more on silence, proximity, and favorable conditions.
In all cases, hydrophone use depends heavily on river conditions. Rough seas, strong currents, or heavy boat traffic can reduce sound quality or make listening impossible. For this reason, we prioritize times when the river is calmer, especially early in the morning and later in the day.
To maximize your chances of hearing underwater sounds—particularly those of belugas—we recommend the 6:30 a.m. or 6:00 p.m. departures, as well as sea kayaking excursions when conditions are favorable.
As with all nature-based experiences, the use of the hydrophone and the presence of marine sounds can never be guaranteed.
